Abundance Arrives as a Price Collapse
Will AI intelligence really become too cheap to meter — and what does the transition cost the people who have to live through it?
This report does not argue that the forecasters of AI abundance are wrong. It asks them to prove they are right, and to describe the transition they are asking everyone else to absorb. Ten iterations since January have tested that claim against the record as it arrived.
The tenth iteration reports the first window in which a substantial part of the proof turned up — and it did not arrive in the form the argument predicted. Between 22 June and 26 July 2026, the AI frontier stopped competing on capability and began competing on price. Abundance is arriving as a price collapse rather than as a concentrated breakthrough.
Payroll microdata analysis from Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab shows roughly a 16% relative decline in employment for workers aged 22 to 25 in the occupations most exposed to AI. Demand for experienced practitioners is holding up. The result is an economy that still wants skilled workers while removing the rungs by which people become skilled.
The report places the probability of a disorderly transition at 90 to 96 percent, the highest it has recorded, and finds the transition running well ahead of any mechanism designed to absorb it. Every source was independently verified on 31 July 2026: 99 unique sources, none dead.
